One of the Fist Fraternities Dartmouth's Alpha Delta Phi
In chapter 5, "Traditions and Tragedies " Hank Newer's novel Wrongs of Passage: Fraternities, Sororities, Hazing, and Binge Drinking, emphasizes the start of traditions in sororities and fraternities across the country, and how they have lead to hazing.
Newer mentions how fraternity houses have been sticklers for staying loyal to traditions. With this is being said, it creates a place for not appropriate traditions that should not be kept these immature actions that can lead to numerous dangerous situations. For example, pledging related activities go back decades pointing to the importance of tradition. According to Newer the first fraternities were syncretic, yoking diverse beliefs in a single organization. Traditions became stronger and stronger every year and the major outcome of many of these traditions was the act of hazing. By not joining in on the activity, during hazing or a pledge, meant not being a member of the fraternity. Newer takes a look at a young lady named Amanda and how she was abused in her sorority. He states how some of these traditions need to be cut loose reason being that these traditions are putting many young lives at risk .

Hazing Group Research

Topic Hazing

The frat boys seem to be forcing the fraternity's newcomers to drink while they are in adult diapers.
Essential Question: Should hazing be outlawed in sororities and fraternities?

Claim: Yes, hazing needs to be outlawed in all sororities and fraternities.

Reason: The act of hazing can put ones life at risk. There have been numerous reported incidents about young college students that have sadly lost their lives due to hazing. Hazing is tolerated by the newcomer because of their desire for a higher social status and the need to fit in. Not many people are aware of this somber act, hazing needs to be put to a stop. Lives and futures are not worth loosing to these immature actions. The harm to one's young life and family is not worth the potential outcome of a lost life.
